On Wal-Mart and Drag Queens
You can’t out-Wal-Mart Wal-Mart, or out-LC LC, so don’t even try. If you insist on concerning yourself with your competition, look at what they are doing and then don’t do that. If you are doing the same thing as your competition, what reason are you giving people to switch? Look for a niche, a way to differentiate yourself. This is often easier said than done, but Mel Rapp seems to have found one.
Mel Rapp thinks drag queens are under-served by the eyewear market. [Toronto’s] reigning glasses geek (Rapp references anti-war activists when recounting the history of the aviator shape and mourns the sale of boutique brands to big, shady manufacturers) has launched a limited collection of acetate frames that are hardy enough to be tossed onto the rowdiest Church Street stage but still stylish, with filigree cutouts and tendrils squiggling out from Dame Edna cat eyes.
