“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

― Neil Gaiman

Do The Hustle

“Every decade I’ve been in this business, somebody has said bookstores are going to die, and [every time] it was for a whole different reason...”  In fact, many have died, but bookstores are making a comeback. Indie bookstores are on the rise because they are more than just places to buy books. They’re finding success by embracing the side-hustle.

And here’s how they’re using Instagram to get the word out.

No Prescription Required

Just debuted at CES, EyeQue VisionCheck, is taking online optical to the next level by skipping the doc altogether—I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth across the internets now.

Along with a mobile app, the EyeQue device conducts vision tests at home resulting in, not your Rx, but your personal "EyeGlass Numbers."  With an annual subscription, you can measure your numbers as often as you like. You can then take the results to specific retailers that honor EyeGlass Numbers like Zenni and EyeBuyDirect (a.k.a. Essilor) to buy your eyeglasses— no appointment, no waiting room, no prescription required.

Can you really buy eyewear without a prescription? EyeQue says, “Yes, you can.”

I’ve said it for years now, you can’t fight advances in technology, especially when they mean savings or convenience for the consumer.

You are cruising along, and then technology changes. You have to adapt.

More Than You Think

When it comes to success, it’s easy to think that people blessed with brains are inevitably going to leave the rest of us in the dust. But research from Stanford University will change your mind—and your attitude.

Selling Is Caring

Robert Bell breaks it down. Selling is not a four-letter word, but what we do when we believe in our work and have the best interests of our customers at heart.

OpticianWorks Video Of The Week - More LEXCE

As you probably know by now, we received a brand new LEXCE edger on loan from Santinelli, so this week, we thought we’d do a quick overview of the LEXCE features including frame tracing, optical lens shape capture, pattern tracing, blocking, drilling, grooving, and multiple bevel options.

Through the OpticianWorks free video lessons, Laramy-K Optical is making every effort to provide better and more accessible education for opticians everywhere, but we’re only able to do it with your support.

You can help keep it going in two ways:

Become a paid-member of OpticianWorks.com for access to the best in online optician training (The videos are only a small portion).

Or, even better, open a Laramy-K Optical lab account for the very best in independent uncut work and we'll throw in the OpticianWorks memberships for free! Your customers and your staff will thank you!

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Optical Retail Success.

Here’s to your success in this year and beyond.
