What is a Rock Star Optician?

SImply put, Rock Star Optician is a path forward for not just the optician, not just opticianry, but the entire eyewear industry. For opticians, it’s a way to move up, to earn more, get more respect, to get off the totem pole of O’s and perhaps most importantly, to love what you do.

Eyecare is a nearly $40 billion per year industry. Eyewear sales make up well over half of the optical revenue pie. That’s a valuable slice! Looking at it another way, 64% of Americans wear eye glasses (that’s over 200,000,000 people). Now think what those numbers might be if we actually looked forward to shopping for eyeglasses. From today’s numbers alone it’s pretty easy to see a rock star optician should not be looking to healthcare for respect. Nor do we need governments or other groups to lift the profession.

The first step is to look to yourself to become the best you can be and help your peers to do the same. A great optician has a unique skill and huge market worthy of respect on its own. Opticians bring in money and make people happy. So, own it! Embrace your craft. Find ways to be different. Build a fan base around those differences. Take responsibility for finding your success and contributing to the betterment of the field.

I wrote a 15-step Ultimate Guide To Becoming A Rock Star Optician that you can read here.

How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything

Everything we do matters. Everything is a chance to do and be our best. Only self-absorbed assholes think they are too good for whatever their current station requires, even if it’s sweeping floors or cleaning bathrooms.

Wherever we are, whatever we’re doing and wherever w are going, we owe it to ourselves, to our art, to the world, to do it well. That’s our primary duty. And our obligation. When action is our priority, vanity falls away.

Work is love made visible.
And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.
For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger.
And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine.
And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man's ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.

—Kahlil Gibran

You Might Be A Bad Manager If…

Being a good leader is hard. All leaders have fallen victim to one of these 12 signs, at one time or another. The key is to recognize it, when it happens. Don’t give yourself excuses. And don’t beat yourself up about it, either! Simply accept it, decide what you’d like to do differently, and move forward.

Ph#ck The Phoropter

Ah, the phoropter. Nothing says sexy quite like this iconic device synonymous with all things ophthalmic. Yet, when was the last time someone walked in the door because they couldn’t wait to have their phorias, ductions, and vergences tested behind this hulking machine of merriment and just happened see one prominently displayed in your ad or on your website? File under: That’s just the way it’s always been done.

Anti-Social Z

Gen Zers are considered to be more social media-savvy than any other generation, but the sluggish interest levels Facebook has been experiencing could start spreading to other platforms. To best reach Gen Z, which has a purchasing power of $44 billion, perhaps we’re going to need yet a different approach.

Eye Robot

Robots may not be ready to take over for opticians just yet, but God help you if solve Rubik’s Cubes for a living.
