I had been the apprentice of a true master optician back in the 1980’s. Last year, after taking off two decades to raise my family, I was looking to re-enter opticianry. Although basic optics haven't changed in that time, so much else in the industry had. I didn't know how I could quickly get up to speed to sit for my state board exams.

Opticianworks.com was truly a game changer for me! The basic (free) ABO Guide was good for helping me pass the ABO, but then I discovered the paid portion. It was there that I found endless tools, in the form of videos, charts, explanations, formulas, and links, that opened my eyes to all that was possible, both in passing my necessary tests, and in becoming a true professional.

Thank you for creating and maintaining such a professional and detailed resource, and at such an affordable price, too! I am a fan of quality overall, wherever I find it. So many things are shoddily done these days, but the quality of your site truly shows.

About the ABO

The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification is a basic credential in the optical industry, particularly in the United States. Established to uphold minimum standards in opticianry, the ABO certification plays a crucial role helps ensure that opticians possess some of the necessary knowledge and skills to provide optician services to the public.

Opticians are professionals who specialize in fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses, based on prescriptions provided by ophthalmologists or optometrists. They are also trained in advising patients/customers on various types of lenses, frames, and contact lenses, taking into account the visual needs and lifestyle preferences of each individual. The ABO certification is designed to validate an optician's proficiency in these areas.

To obtain ABO certification, candidates must pass a comprehensive examination that tests their knowledge in several key areas. These include optical principles, lens dispensing, frame adjustment and repair, and basic ocular anatomy and physiology. The exam also covers important aspects of patient care, such as interpreting prescriptions and understanding the legal and ethical responsibilities of opticians.

In the optical industry, the ABO certification serves as a minimum standard of professional competence. It reassures patients and employers alike that an optician has met nationally recognized standards. For opticians, the certification can enhance professional credibility, potentially leading to better job opportunities and career advancement. It also fosters a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that they have achieved a level of expertise recognized by their peers and the industry.

Furthermore, in some states, ABO certification is a prerequisite for licensure.

The Laramy-K OpticianWorks training program will not only help you pass the ABO NOCE exam, but will help fill in the gaps so you or your staff can become outstanding opticians.
