“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Financial Help For Small Businesses To Survive The Coronavirus Pandemic

The stimulus package passed last week provides an immediate $10,000 grant to help small businesses impacted by COVID-19.  If you own and operate a business and do nothing else, I recommend you fill out this short form.  It takes less than 10 minutes. The NFIB, the nation's leading small business advocacy organization in Washington, D.C., indicated that the grant is expected to be distributed within 3 days of application.

A short-form application for SBA Disaster Loan Assistance is available at this link:

The NFIB has conducted 3 webinars.  The replays and other resouces are located here:

On Friday, April 3, small businesses and sole proprietors can apply for a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The Department of the Treasury is encouraging small business to apply ASAP because there is a funding cap.

The PPP application is being handled through any existing SBA 7(a) lender or through any federally insured depository, institution, federally insured credit union. These loans will be fully forgiven in many cases. However, forgiveness is based on the employer maintaining or quickly rehiring employees and maintaining salary levels. Forgiveness will be reduced if full-time headcount declines, or if salaries and wages decrease. Banks are building online application pages, so you can only apply online, however you may want to speak with your banker and get the application process started earlier, if possible.

The SBA is also offering an Economic Disaster Loan (EDL) that provides small businesses with working capital loans of up to $2 million to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue. The loan advance (the $10,000 grant referred to above) will provide economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing a temporary loss of revenue. Again, funds will be made available within three days of a successful application, and this loan advance will not have to be repaid.

Killing Time

So, you find yourself stuck. Stuck in a meeting, stuck waiting for a friend, stuck in a job you can’t stand, stuck indoors because of bad weather, or stuck at home because, well, there’s a global pandemic. In other words, you have time to kill, right?

But if you think about it, why would anyone want to kill time? We have so precious little of it, shouldn’t it be thoughtfully rationed, carefully spent, and properly savored?

When you find yourself stuck, you are stuck because you don’t have control over the circumstance. But, you always have control over what you do with it.

If this pandemic is teaching us anything, it’s how we take for granted the time we have. We may have less than we think and what little we do have, we’re not likely to spend on the things are actually most important to us. If you’re like most, you’ve been given a great gift—the gift of time you wouldn’t have otherwise had. How will you spend it?
