Seeing 2020 Through The Chaos - The Dawn of the Portfolio Career
If you have safely navigated the pandemic and turmoil that 2020 has brought us thus far, there is clearly much to be thankful for. And if you have managed to pause and tried to peer through the chaos, you have may have realized that we are at a major inflection point, one that we have been building toward for a number of years. It has been accelerated and amplified by current events and to say that it presents significant challenges is an understatement. But, if you look for the silver lining, it may also present the opportunity to have greater control over your future.
To ride out the storm, professionals of all generations appear to be turning to “portfolio careers” to earn their living through a mix of contracted freelance jobs, consulting gigs, short-term projects, board membership, and other engagements that allow them to apply their expertise under flexible conditions.
With Gen-Xers already succumbing to ageist layoffs, job dissatisfaction high among all generations, small businesses going under, unemployment almost certain to remain high for the foreseeable future, and disruptive technologies (e.g. telemedicine and online sales) coming even faster due to COVID-19; this could mean a mass exodus (both willing and unwilling) from traditional employment.
In his book Unscaled, Hemant Taneja writes about the idea of the “personal enterprise” as the key to succeeding in the coming economy whereby most of us live an entrepreneurial life of sorts. Taneja is a venture capitalist who—even prior to the pandemic—sees most full-time jobs disappearing, replaced by a combination of technology and contract workers.
He sees the “personal enterprise” as a mix of long-term contracts, freelance projects, side hustles, and entrepreneurial ventures that each of us develops, manages, and markets with the aid of the very technologies that threaten to replace us.
Regardless of whether or not you will be replaced by robots, the events of this year should have given you pause to consider the logic of placing all your financial eggs in one job basket or even one business basket for that matter.
Will the shift toward side-hustles, online businesses, and multiple income streams be challenging, especially for more job-oriented people? Very much so. This is a massive failure of our schools. Unfortunately, we may have little choice as job stability and the traditional idea of a career may become a thing of the past if it has not already. However, technology is evolving (has evolved) to make these opportunities easier and more accessible than most of us could have even imagined.
The upside to this challenge is an opportunity to build a more exciting, meaningful set of activities that provide more money, greater flexibility, meaningful personal growth, and even improved health and personal safety.
Entrepreneurship is a personal growth engine disguised as a business pursuit.
Even if you maintain a traditional “real job,” as I suspect many of us will, you’ll still need to think and act like an entrepreneur to do well. Of course, doing so will also give you the ability to both see and take advantage of opportunities beyond the job.
Why do extra? After all, the industrial system has squeezed everything it can out of front-line workers. It has taken without offering much in return, stripping people of dignity and respect and treating them like cogs.
The current crisis is a vivid reminder of how empty a job focused on getting by really is. Because getting by is a lousy way to spend our days. Playwrights, painters, and committed professionals don’t ask, “how little can I get away with?” They view the work as a chance to make a difference instead.
There are three types of employees:
Type 1 do the minimum of what is required.
Type 2 think ahead and solve problems before they happen.
Type 3 proactively look for areas of opportunity and growth in the business and figure out how to act on them. Type 3 is what the Rockstar Optician is all about.
Of course, many people believe they are getting back at the system that wants to chew them up and spit them out by being Type 1. When in reality, the only ones they are hurting are themselves. Not only are they missing out on the joy of helping others and doing their best work, but by refusing to deliver and achieve more they miss the personal growth and opportunities to physically or mentally break free of the system. Being Type 1 merely ensures a lifelong sentence of indentured servitude.
For those in a hiring position, it’s easy to train people to do Type 1 work. It’s not so easy to train people to think ahead (Type 2) and it’s virtually impossible to train someone to care about opportunities and growth (Type 3).
Type 2 is a valuable employee and Type 3 is found gold. This is why it is often better to hire for attitude and aptitude rather than skillset.

Doing Hard Time
The next time you find yourself staring down a difficult, time-consuming or boring task, don’t tell yourself that you’ll do it later. Tell yourself that it’s going to be difficult, time-consuming and boring. Acknowledge that you’re going to hate every minute of it. Let yourself accept that it’s going to suck—and then, surprisingly enough, you might be motivated to get it over with.
