C’mon N’ Ride It (The Train)ing Guide

This is kind of a big deal ...or we hope so.

It’s more important than ever to have good, well-trained opticians on staff and we know how hard it is to find or train those opticians. That’s why Mr. Seegers started OpticianWorks online training, as a passion-project, all the way back in 2008. Of course, as amazing as the program has become and as convenient as online training is, it does have its limitations—the biggest one being the lack of hands-on practical application.  

Now, without sounding too dramatic, after years of trying to come up with a solution, we finally have a document that is going to change the way you train opticians. This document—with surprisingly little effort on your part—will raise the level of your optician staff and bring more value to your customers, your business, and opticianry as a whole— more so than any other certification, licensing or degree program that exists today. In fact, we’d hire Phil Swift to do our ads, but he just bought a $20 mil mansion and well, we’re not charging you for it. 

It doesn’t matter if your State requires a license or not. This document will make your life easier, it will make your trainees and trainers happier. It will make everyone wanna sing, “woo wooo”, while elevating the capabilities and knowledge of the entire optician staff—no matter how much experience or training they already have. 

The videos and training program that made OpticianWorks famous are just the foundation. The Laramy-K OpticianWorks Optician Qualification Standard (OQS) is the document that actually brings the optician curriculum out of the books and off the web pages into the real world of your optical business..

100% free to download, the OQS and contains everything an optician should know and be able to do, in order to his or her job well, breaking it all down into “bite-sized” knowledge and practical requirements. It can be used in conjunction with any training material you wish to use (but it was designed to work best with OpticiansWorks, duh).

So, how exactly does it work, you ask? In a nutshell, your trainee learns about each requirement on her/his own time and then, when ready, engages in a discussion or practical demonstration with a designated qualifier—either on your staff or in your area—to obtain signature proof of competency before moving on to the next requirement. Rinse and repeat.

The printable OQS acts as a road map, progress monitor, motivational tool, and physical proof of competency all-in-one.

As long as you have at least one or two people in your office who you can designate as “qualifiers” with the ability to discuss, verify, and sign off on these requirements, you can essentially hand this document to your new hire or trainee, set a timeline for completion, and you're on your way.
